The ‘Single’ Eye

by Sandra Conner (Radical About Jesus Ministries)

EYE & BROW EDITEDThe light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, the whole body shall be full of light.” (Matt. 6:22).

Scientists tell us that light energy is behind all life in this universe. That makes sense, when we consider that in the very beginning, before God created any living creatures, He created light. The Word also tells us that Jesus came into the world bringing His life, and that the life was the light of all men. (John 1:4). It goes on to say that when the light shines in darkness, the darkness cannot overcome it.

Now we can all testify to that fact. We’ve all heard the adage about lighting just one little candle and how that one tiny flame will dispel darkness. We’ve seen it happen again and again. But what I want you to comprehend today is that when light comes into darkness, what really happens is that the light destroys – obliterates – that darkness. More simply put: wherever light is, darkness CANNOT exist.

Disease – and every other form of evil that comes against the human being in this life – is the work of the devil, sin, and the curse that accompanies both. There was no sickness in the original plan of God or on the planet earth until man rebelled against his Creator and sold out to the devil, bringing a curse upon himself and all the rest of the earth. Sickness, along with every other evil work, came into existence as a result and continues to grow and expand across the planet. Sickness does not come from God’s kingdom; it comes from the kingdom of darkness. We can explain it with a very simple equation: Sickness = Darkness at work in the body.

But Jesus came into the world to change all that. The Word tells us clearly that He came to destroy the works of darkness – the works of the devil. “For this purpose was the Son of God manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 Joh  3:8, Col. 1:13).

Now, let’s add all this up: Jesus is the Word; Jesus is light; so the Word is also light. Jesus (Light) destroys the works of the devil – whom the Word describes as the ruler of the kingdom of darkness. So if there is disease (darkness) in your body, what you need is to get the light of Jesus into that part of you so that He can destroy the darkness and overcome the disease. How do we do that?

We focus our attention exclusively on Jesus and His Word. What we focus on, we open ourselves up to and gravitate toward. What we feed on becomes a part of us. When the doctor gives us a bad medical report, we have two choices. We can focus on and feed upon that evil report, or we can focus on and feed upon the report of God’s Word that says over and over again that God has provided healing for us. We can focus on Jesus who is the Word made flesh.

Now we don’t deny that the doctor’s report exists. We don’t deny that there is a physical condition that led to that report. But we deny that condition the right to continue existing in our bodies. We demand, on the basis of our covenant and God’s promises – and the finished work of Jesus – that the condition leave our bodies and that our bodies receive health instead.

So how does our “eye” fit into all of this? If our “eye is single, the whole body shall be full of light.” Our eye is “single” only when we keep our eyes turned upon Jesus and His Word. We do not look at Jesus with one eye and then the medical report with the other. We are not up one day when we read a scripture and then down the next day because we read the medical report again or visited the doctor again. We may have visited the doctor, but if we have made the decision that we believe what God says and what Jesus did, then we don’t give a place to that doctor’s report. We put it on the back shelf and keep focusing our eyes on the Word — the light – the healing – of Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 4:22 says God’s Word is literally medicine to all our flesh. So set your eyes on that Word and keep them there. And if we will keep our eye “singly” on Jesus’ Word, eventually, our whole body will be full of light (health and life).
